Payton is an experienced criminal barrister with a busy and well-established practice spanning all aspects of serious and complex crime. He is instructed in both prosecution and defence, providing clients and solicitors with balanced, strategic, and well-informed representation at every stage of proceedings.
Payton regularly appears in cases involving serious violence, including domestic abuse and sexual offences, as well as dishonesty offences, weapons and drug-related crime, and confiscation and asset recovery proceedings. His ability to manage demanding and high-pressure cases is underpinned by meticulous preparation, attention to detail, and a calm courtroom presence.
In addition to his criminal practice, Payton undertakes work in regulatory law, advising and representing clients in matters where professional standing and reputation are at stake. He has also recently trained as a mediator, enabling him to assist in the resolution of civil, commercial, and workplace disputes with a pragmatic and solution-focused approach.
Having lived in four countries across three continents, and through extensive international service work, Payton brings a strong international and cultural awareness to his practice.
